Dash for Diabetes, ready, set…5 tips to GO
One of our favorite signs that spring is right around the corner is the annual Dash for Diabetes 5k Run/Walk put on by Coplin Health Systems Diabetes Initiative. CHS will be teaming up with Ravenswood Recreation Youth Program to spread awareness for the nationwide epidemic of diabetes. Unbeknownst to most, one of the best ways to prevent diabetes is through exercise!
So, what better ways to raise awareness and teach prevention than through a 5K Run/Walk! While a 5K does not seem like a daunting distance to walk or run, getting your body prepared makes for better results and less chance of getting hurt which ultimately makes for more chance of fun!
Here are a few tips from us to get you ready to compete in the Dash for Diabetes 5K:
Talk to your doctor!
You should always consult your doctor before engaging in any fitness programs to ensure that you are healthy enough for exercise.
Start a training plan!
Following a plan gives your exercises more purpose which then helps you stay motivated through your exercises. The most effective training plans should start roughly six weeks before the race. We have a good one here tailored specifically for walking a 5K, but there are many more you can find about running.
Stretch!
One of the most important things to do to prevent yourself from any serious injuries when exercising is to do dynamic stretching both before and after any physical activity.
Do your own fitness assessment!
Challenge yourself to walk or run at a pace where your breathing is labored, but you are still able to talk for about fifteen minutes. This is a sign you are at a good place physically to begin training for your 5K.
Make sure you have the proper gear!
Having the correct equipment can improve your performance and also prevent you from any injuries. But warning – don’t try out your new running shoes on race day.
Begin your training plan today – the Dash for Diabetes is right around the corner and we want to see you there! Show us what you’ve got June 11th, 2022 at Riverfront Park in Ravenswood.
