Get to Know Kelly McLain – Parkersburg Clinic’s New Pediatrician
Coplin Health Systems is pleased to announce that pediatrician Dr. Kelly McLain, MD has been serving patients at the Parkersburg Family Care on Emerson Avenue since May of this year. Dr. McLain joins the Coplin healthcare team with a passion and dedication to all of her patients.
We recently sat down with Dr. McLain to discuss her experience working in child healthcare and what she hopes to bring to the Parkersburg Family Care.
What types of services will you offer at Coplin?
I will offer well-child care that can include immunizations and sick visits for newborn patients up to adolescents.
What drove you to choose this career path?
I became interested in medicine after taking an anatomy class in high school. During my medical school rotations, I quickly learned that taking care of children was fun and rewarding.
Activities you do beyond what most people see?
I like to travel, visit museums, and learn about the history of many different places. I also enjoy reading, especially historical fiction.
If you could give one piece of health advice, what would it be?
In pediatrics, prevention is really our bread and butter. If we can help families adopt healthy lifestyles now, they will have the tools to help their children grow into healthy adults.
Misconceptions people often have about your job?
That I deliver babies.
What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
I laugh and smile many times a day due to things that children say and do.
I also love being able to ease a mother’s anxiety when she has concerns.
When not at Coplin, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with my family. I watch lots of sporting events, thanks to three athletic children.
What community or volunteer activities do you participate in?
Since living in Parkersburg, I have participated in the Junior League of Parkersburg, as well as many church activities at South Parkersburg Baptist Church. I have served in the Children and Youth ministries at SPBC, as well as coached Upward Basketball there for many years. I also enjoy helping my children with their 4-H service projects.
Professional Interests? (ie, immunizations, diabetes, healthy eating, etc.)
Immunization is one of my personal interests that I am passionate about. I recently did a Quality Improvement project on HPV vaccination, and I was able to increase my immunization rates remarkably. Vaccines are probably the biggest success story of modern medicine.
One fun fact about yourself?
I used to have a purple car that was named Grimace (the purple McDonalds guy for those who may not remember).
What do you love (or look forward to) the most about your job?
I enjoy watching my patients grow. Then, I get to take care of some of their children after they grow up. That is really cool!
Tell us about you personally – are you from Parkersburg?
I was born in Keyser, WV. I have been practicing in Marietta for the last 13 years, and now I am looking forward to serving my home state of WV for the rest of my career.
I am married to Kyle McLain, my husband of almost 20 years. We have three children, Carter (15), Camryn (12), and Cate (9). We have three cats (brothers) that the kids each had to have when they were home for COVID-19.
