Annual Dash for Diabetes Registration Now Open
Coplin Health Systems (CHS) Diabetes Initiative is teaming up with the city of Ravenswood for the third consecutive year to host the Dash for Diabetes 5K Walk/Run. With the diabetes epidemic continuing to grow at a national level, this race is hosted to encourage healthy eating and exercise, which are two of the most effective ways to prevent diabetes. This is just one of the many community education programs the CHS Diabetes Initiative developed to increase awareness of the diabetes epidemic and diabetes prevention.
The 5K Run/Walk will take place at Riverfront Park in Ravenswood, WV on Saturday, April 6, 2019. Rain or shine, the race begins at 9:00 A.M. sharp with registration beginning at 8:00 A.M. To be guaranteed a commemorative race t-shirt, you must pre-register by March 10th. The pre-registration fee is $20. Race Day registration is $25 and t-shirts will be limited for those who register the day of the race. Awards will be given to overall male and female winners and to the male and female winners of age groups for both runners and walkers.
CHS is urging community involvement in this event for many reasons. “Our main goal for the Diabetes Initiative is to seek interventions to help patients improve hemoglobin A1C. The majority of people don’t understand that diabetes can be prevented by healthy meal planning and exercise,” Cherrie L. Cowan, NP-C, Certified Advanced Diabetes Management NP and Certified Diabetes Educator. “Our goal with the race, in particular, is to get community members active and into a healthy exercise routine.”
Novo Nordisk, a global healthcare company specializing in diabetes care, has been a corporate sponsor for this event the past two years and CHS is proud to team up with them again for another year. Their company shares the same values as CHS when it comes to spreading awareness, treating and preventing diabetes.
All proceeds from the race will go to CHS Diabetes Initiative and Ravenswood Youth Sports Program to continue the encouragement of healthy lifestyles within the community. “On behalf of the City of Ravenswood, we would like to thank Coplin Heath Systems for their continued investment in Ravenswood and for the continued partnership regarding the Dash for Diabetes. We must do everything in our power to stir up conversation about the health and well-being of residents in this community. We will always welcome Coplin Health Systems and the Dash for Diabetes in our community.” Ravenswood Mayor Josh Miller. CHS encourages members of Jackson and the surrounding counties to come and participate in this event to raise awareness of diabetes and work towards prevention.
